Disasters:
A disaster
is a sudden, calamitous event that seriously disturbs the functioning of
a community or society and causes human, material, and economic or
environmental losses that exceed the society’s ability to cope using its own
resources.
Though often
caused by nature, disasters can have human origins.
Hazards:
Hazard may be
defined as “a dangerous condition, which have the potential for causing injury
to life, damage to property & the environment damage.”
The word ‘hazard’
owes its origin to the word ‘hasard’ in
old French and ‘az-zahr’ in Arabic meaning ‘chance’ or ‘luck’.
Hazards are classified into two types:
1. Natural Hazard
2. Manmade Hazard
