Types of Bearings

Bearing:
A Bearing is a machine element, that constrain relative motion to a desired direction and reduces friction between moving parts.
Bearings are classified according to the type of operation, and the direction of loads applied to the parts.

Types of Bearings:
There are 6 common types of bearings based on their operations.

  1. Plain Bearing
  2. Rolling element Bearing
    • Ball Bearing
    • Roller Bearing
  3. Jewel Bearing
  4. Fluid Bearing
  5. Magnetic Bearing
  6. Flexture Bearing

Plain Bearing:
It consist of a shaft rotating in a hole.
Ex: Bushing, Journal bearing, Sleeve bearing, Rifle bearing, Composite bearing.
Bushing: Radial plain bearing that is a complete cylinder.
Journal Bearing: A shaft (journal) that rotates freely in a shell

Rolling Element Bearing:
In this type a rolling element is between the turning and stationary hub which prevent sliding friction.
These are of 2 types: 1) Ball Bearing & 2) Roller bearing
Ball Bearing: in this type, the rolling elements are spherical
Roller Bearings: in this type the rolling elements are Cylindrical rollers.

Jewel Bearing:
It is a type of plain bearing in which one of the bearing surfaces is made of an Ultrahard glassy jewel material.

Fluid Bearing:
It is a non contact bearing (no contact between shaft and hub & completely filled with lubrication). In this type, load is supported by the gas or liquid.

Magnetic Bearing:
In this type, the load is supported by Magnetic field.

Flexture bearing:
In this type, motion is supported by a load element which bends.
