Merits and Demerits of Gas Turbine over IC Engine

Merits of Gas Turbine

1. Mechanical efficiency is high (95%).
2. Flywheel not required.
3. Weight of turbine is less.
4. Gas turbine can drive at a high speed @4000RPM.
5. Gives more Output.
6. Components are lighter.
7. Lubrication and ignition is simple.
8. Cheap fuels can be used.
9. Exhausted gases are less polluted.
10. Because of Less weight, it is used in aircrafts.

Demerits of Gas Turbine

1. Thermal efficiency is low ( < 50%-20%).
2. Due to High Speed, speed reduction devices are used.
3. Difficult to start the engine.
4. Needed Special Cooling system for turbine blades.
5. Very poor thermal efficiency.
6. Manufacturing of blades is difficult and costly.
7. For same output, it produces 5times exhaust gases.
